Released in 2015, Tencent’s Honour of Kings continues to break records with 100 million average daily active users to date.
Honor of Kings or Wangzhe Rongyao is a mobile MOBA only available in China. The game has just celebrated its fifth anniversary. Tencent’s Timi Studios is the developer of the game. And it has just been revealed that the game has recorded 100 million daily active users.
Timi released the game in November 2015 for both iOS and Android platforms. Timi and Activision worked together to bring Call of Duty to smartphone users.
The way the Honor of Kings was created was quite interesting. Back in 2015, Tencent contacted Riot Games and proposed plans to bring League of Legends to mobile. However, the offer was rejected by Riot. Therefore, Tencent decided to make a separate game and named it Wangzhe Rongyao.
Shortly after its release, the game was immediately successful. Two years later, it became the highest-revenue game in the world.
Because of its popularity, Tencent went on to develop an international version called Arena of Valor, released in 2017. The game has adversely affected the relationship between Riot and Tencent. According to Riot, the game is a copy of League of Legends.
Later, in an interview with Dot Esports, Riot stated that the situation was not very good but it was resolved.
The upcoming League of Legends: Wild Rift will be Riot’s attempt to capture the profitable mobile gaming market. In some areas, the game is in an open testing phase. And by spring 2021, it will be available in almost all regions of the world. Contrary to what Riot had previously told Tencent, the Wild Rift is proof that LMHT’s gameplay can be put on mobile devices.
Despite this, Tencent’s Honour of Kings continues to break records. The game has its own top league. The 2020 Kings World Cup was held in Shanghai and Beijing as a LAN event. The total prize money for the event was over $4.5 million. Half of them are from community fundraising.
